Gengars are dangerous. Unlike their prevolved forms (which like to play pranks on people), Gengars will seriously screw you up.
If you are unlucky enough to have a Gengar living in your house, you will start to have bad dreams; I mean nightmares to the extreame.
If a Gengar is not captured or dealt with quickly, there can be serious long term mental damage to a victim.
There are certain ways to tell when you have a Gengar residing in your home:
Other pokemon can sense them...
Strange smells will appear, like that of sulphur and rotten eggs...
Ectoplasm, a dark sticky substance like treacle may appear (but only in extreme cases)...
Things will move around the house...

They are hard to capture and scientists have not yet been successful in evolving Gengar naturally from a Haunter due to the prescence of the 'hidden gene'.
They are an anomally in the scientific world, being a gas and a solid at the same time, while also being able to phase through solid matter. It's a confusing prospect.
The only explanation is that they are out of sync with our dimensional bounderies, living outside the laws of physics and yet still having physical traits. (as I told you earlier, it's confusing) They can be caught however as they still have the same magnetic charge that runs through everything.
They seem to have no internal organs and feed by breaking down matter into energy.
They do not (or can not) sleep or drink.
Many studies have been made on them (when they can be found, as they are very rare) but there is still no answer as to how or where they came from.
They are simply another anomaly in the world of pokemon evo.
